In 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo joined Real Madrid from Manchester United for a transfer fee of $132 million, which made him the most expensive soccer player in the history of the sport. Currently plays as a winger or striker for Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid and is the captain of the Portuguese national team. Ronaldo has the second highest football salary in any league with $20 million annually including bonuses (behind Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o who plays for Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala). Ronaldo has also cashed in on his fame and success, earning $22 million annually off the pitch thanks to deals with Nike, Castrol, Konami and others. He is the second football player when it comes to endorsement earnings, trailing only David Beckham. In 2012 he became the first player in La Liga history to score 40 goals in two seasons. The Portuguese winger has more Twitter followers than any other athlete in the world and Facebook’s most popular athlete. Ronaldo became the most expensive footballer in history after moving from Manchester United to Real Madrid in a transfer worth $131.6 million (€93.9 million). He is no relation to Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo. His father, Jose Dinis, named him after his favourite actor Ronald Reagan, who was US president at the time.

English footballer who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy, David Robert Joseph Beckham has a net worth of £160 million ($260m) as of April 2012, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. The list valued Beckham and his wife Victoria at £190 million. Though football made his name, it plays a lesser part in his annual earnings than endorsements. His company, Footwork Productions, paid him nearly £86m from 2002 to 2010.

Astute management on and off the pitch keeps Beckham at the top of his game, he signed a new two-year deal in January 2012 with LA Galaxy, who made him the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer when he joined in 2007. Since playing in the MLS he has benefited from sponsorship deals with companies such as Adidas, EA Sports and Yahoo. His wife, a former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, has clothing and accessories company (Beckham Brand Limited) valued at £30 million and it was named designer brand of the year at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. He is equally renowned for his wardrobe, though his latest moneyspinner is more high street than high fashion. The “bodywear” range for H&M includes pants and vests that allowed him to show off his sportsman’s physique He is now preparing for his life after football and will help promote the 2012 London Olympics.
